“its was not my intention to join Fiorentina, I don’t want to retire from football at the peak of my career- Ex-Man Utd goalkeeper David de Gea explains break from football before Fiorentina move as he insists he ‘never thought about retiring’.
WHAT CAME ABOUT?
The Spanish goalie quit Old Trafford at the end of the 2022–23 season, when his deal with the Red Devils was up. Since then, the 33-year-old goalkeeper has not played in a league game because United signed Andre Onana from Inter to replace him.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
De Gea will finally be able to play football again, though, since he joined Fiorentina for free last week. The former Spain international made his official debut as a Fiorentina player on Monday. He then talked about why he chose to take a long break from the game.
WHAT DAVID DE GEA SAID
The goalkeeper told reporters, “Man United is a great club, and my heart will always be there and there.” I never thought about quitting, but it was hard to get excited about starting a new journey after 12 years at a top club like Man United. At Fiorentina, I finally felt that way.”
