BREAKING NEWS: Chelsea have finally won the transfer battle over Arsenal and City as £80m hitman who netted 12goals from 11games this season have agreed personal terms to join Maresca project by January.

Chelsea’s defensive strategy has heavily relied on two key defenders, who have become regular fixtures in their backline. This has significantly reduced opportunities for others, as manager Enzo Maresca appears unconvinced by the performances of Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo. Neither player has done enough to earn a consistent starting role.

To bolster his defense, Maresca is reportedly eyeing Benfica’s Tomas Araujo, according to Portuguese outlet O Jogo. However, Chelsea will have to fend off competition from Crystal Palace and Newcastle United, who are also pursuing the 22-year-old.

Araujo’s contract includes a hefty £83 million release clause, which could complicate negotiations. It’s uncertain whether Benfica will demand the full amount or accept a lower fee. Additionally, his wage demands are expected to be high, meaning Chelsea must be ready for a significant financial outlay.

Signing Araujo could address Chelsea’s defensive vulnerabilities, especially given Maresca’s doubts about Badiashile and Adarabioyo, particularly in high-stakes competitions like the Champions League. Araujo’s skill set—strong passing, physicality, pace, and aerial prowess—makes him a modern, versatile defender capable of playing as a center-back or right-back. His adaptability and effectiveness in set-piece situations further enhance his appeal.

Despite his potential, it’s unclear whether Araujo is Chelsea’s top defensive target. The club may also consider options with Premier League experience, such as Marc Guehi or Jarrad Branthwaite, who could provide an immediate impact and familiarity with English football.

Ultimately, Chelsea’s decision will depend on Maresca’s long-term vision and the club’s willingness to take risks in the transfer market. They must balance the promise of a rising talent like Araujo against the immediate benefits of signing a more experienced Premier League defender.
