England Boss Gareth Southgate is set to become the new manager of surprising Premier League club
Gareth Southgate says one Man City man has really impressed him.
Tottenham manager Gareth Southgate has said that one Manchester City player is very good.
The 53-year-old coach of the England national team has seen a lot of Premier League games and worked with a lot of top-level players during his time in that job.
What the England boss has done this season, though, has made him single out a Premier League player he knows very well and give him great praise.
Henry Winter reported that Southgate said these things about Phil Foden at the recent Football Writers’ Association award event. He began by talking about the first time he ever saw the player.
“It was a camp for kids under 16 at St. George’s Park,” he said. There’s a buzz around the place when you get a great player. “Have you seen Phil?! “, everyone asked.
MORE MAN CITY STORIES: “I really see the same player now (as then)—the way he moves, how he twists and turns, and how he glides.” After that, they told me he was 14!
“He’s kept that hunger alive by working every day with great players, Pep Guardiola, and an amazing teaching staff.”
“Phil really likes football.” He really enjoys playing with the ball. Every time we work with [Jack] Grealish, we have to drag him off the field! Phil is a great player. He’ll be famous for a long time. We’re lucky to have him.
This year Foden has shown what a gentleman he is.
This season, the 23-year-old has played in 51 games across all tournaments and scored 25 goals and set up 11 others. That’s 13 more goals than he got in 48 games last season.
As the FWA Men’s Player of the Year and a nominee for both the Premier League and City’s Player of the Season, it’s clear why Southgate thinks so highly of him.
Given that Foden has already played 33 times for England under Southgate and scored four goals and set up eight others, it looks like he will be in the team for the European Championship in Germany this summer.
