Maya Le Tissier has been named captain of Manchester United for the 2024–25 season. Katie Zelem left the team in the summer.
When the center back first came to the club from Brighton & Hove Albion two years ago, she quickly became a trusted member of the defense.
She said, “It is an honor to be named captain of this great football club. I will wear the armband with real pride and help this team succeed on and off the field.”
Since 2019, Zelem had been in the job. She won the FA Cup in May but quit when her contract ran out the following month. The playmaker now plays for Angel City in the NWSL.
Le Tissier had a great couple of seasons. She and Millie Turner formed a strong relationship that helped United keep a WSL record 14 clean sheets in 2022–23, when they came second.
Le Tissier’s first senior England call-up came after Euro 2022, and she has since played four times for the country. She was on the “standby” list for the 2023 World Cup and traveled to Australia with the team, but she did not play in the tournament. Serina Wiegman, the manager of the Lionesses, sees the 22-year-old as more of a full-back, where she played for Brighton, than a center-back. This has made it harder for her to play for her country.
At the end of the 2023–24 season, Le Tissier and Ella Toone, who has been named vice-captain, were both chosen United’s Players’ Player of the Year. Before, Zelem did not have a named deputy, but Hayley Ladd would often take over when the captain was not around.
Le Tissier signed a new deal in April that lasts until 2028. Toone did the same thing in 2022 and his deal lasts until the end of the next season. The second player has scored 53 goals in 164 games for United, making him the club’s all-time top scorer and player.
