When Chelsea lost to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, Frank Lampard said Nicolas Jackson wasn’t up to Chelsea’s level.
It will be puzzling for Mauricio Pochettino’s team that they didn’t make it to next month’s final because they missed several chances to take the lead against City at Wembley.
Jackson missed three clear chances for Chelsea, including a second-half header from close range that he hit straight at City goalie Stefan Ortega.
“Poor day at the office for him,” Alan Shearer said when the BBC talked about Jackson’s performance after the game.
“It’s been the same story for Chelsea all season. Before the game, Poch said that he thought they should be in or near fourth place in the Premier League, but because of the xG,” which is exactly what he meant.
‘Two one-on-ones and three great chances, Jackson never really looked comfortable. He made the wrong choice and made some great runs, but he never looked comfortable.
“They really do nothing but sit there,” I said. He had three great chances, but he never moved the ball from his feet.
Lampard felt sorry for Jackson, but he thinks the 22-year-old didn’t play as well as Chelsea needs from their main scorer.
Lampard said, “I feel a little sorry for him because he made a lot of good moves. He’s a young striker, and the things we saw in him today—he’s racing Kyle Walker, he’s shown speed and good movement—but there’s a technical detail there—the extra touch and the decisions at the highest level make the difference in these highest level games.”
“If you hit the shot anywhere but his body, it’s a goal.” I feel bad for him because we’ve all missed chances like that, and it’s a very important one for the game.
“But that’s the level you need to be at as a young player to play goal for Chelsea.”
