Manchester City reach ‘full agreement’ to re-sign Legend from Barcelona with veteran midfielder making huge financial sacrifice to seal Premier League return
Gundogan is coming back to the Etihad Stadium just one year after leaving. The Athletic says that the 33-year-old will sign a one-year deal with City, with the chance of a second year. The former Germany international will even give up the last two years of pay that Barcelona owed him in order to make the move possible.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Gundogan played more than 50 games for Barcelona in all categories last season and was named to the La Liga Team of the Season. But a new head coach at Camp Nou has brought about a new plan, and the experienced player was told that Hansi Flick did not want to work with him. Gundogan allegedly talked with Pep Guardiola about coming back, and the City manager agreed to the deal.
DID YOU KNOW?
Guardiola signed Gundogan as his first player as City manager in 2016. The midfielder played 188 times for the club in his first stint. It was a great seven years for him. He won the Premier League five times, the FA Cup twice, and the Champions League once.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO CITY?
The defending Premier League winners have not made many deals this summer. Gundogan and Savinho, a Brazilian player, are the only two big names they have added so far. The 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday, though, showed that this team does not need much to be in the running for a fifth straight title. On Saturday, they play Ipswich Town at home.
