“After One and a half unforgettable years, it’s time to say goodbye” – Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca officially resigns as he posts an emotional farewell message on Instagram

Chelsea’s outgoing manager Enzo Maresca provided little clarity in his final public statements before leaving Stamford Bridge. The club announced the Italian’s departure on New Year’s Day, expressing appreciation for the 45-year-old’s contributions during his time there.

Maresca’s Chelsea tenure ended abruptly, less than two years into what was supposed to be a five-year contract running until summer 2029. He did enjoy success at the club, guiding them to triumph in both the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup.

However, his relationship with Chelsea’s leadership deteriorated significantly in recent weeks, ultimately making his position untenable. A dismal run of form—just one win in seven Premier League matches—saw the Blues fall well behind Arsenal in the title race.

Following a 2-2 home draw with Bournemouth, Chelsea sat precariously just five points above 14th-placed Brighton. Maresca missed his usual post-match press conference due to illness, meaning his final words to the media and fans had already been spoken.

When pressed about why his team struggled to control home matches—despite remaining in contention for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification—Maresca offered vague responses.

After their defeat to Aston Villa, during a press conference that also previewed the Bournemouth game, Maresca admitted: “Honestly, I don’t know. We need to understand why this keeps happening, because it’s clearly not random when something occurs repeatedly.

“We have to figure out why we consistently concede goals and lose control of matches, regardless of whether we’re winning, drawing, or losing.”

On Champions League qualification, Maresca remained hopeful: “That’s our target right now. Tonight’s performance didn’t really reflect the 10-point gap between us and Villa.

“We need to stay confident and believe we can close the gap on the teams ahead of us.” Unfortunately for him, Maresca won’t get the chance to solve his team’s home struggles, as Chelsea confirmed his departure on New Year’s Day.

The club’s official statement said: “Chelsea Football Club and head coach Enzo Maresca have parted ways.

“Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup. These achievements will remain an important part of our recent history, and we’re grateful for his contributions.

“With significant objectives still ahead across four competitions, including Champions League qualification, both Enzo and the club believe a change gives us the best chance to get the season back on track. We wish Enzo all the best for the future.”

At the heart of Maresca’s recent comments about his “worst 48 hours” was apparently a disagreement with Chelsea’s medical department. Reports suggest Maresca occasionally selected players against medical advice, creating friction behind the scenes.

Furthermore, contact between Maresca’s agents and Manchester City fueled speculation that Pep Guardiola might leave the Etihad at season’s end. While Maresca properly informed Chelsea of these discussions as his contract required, the club’s hierarchy viewed it as an unnecessary distraction during a crucial campaign.

Against this backdrop of uncertainty, Maresca’s rapport with the media also seemed to deteriorate. Chelsea return to action on Sunday with a trip to face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
